70th Year Anniversary of the Vaughan Estate 10 Years of Hospitality at the Estates

This spring marks the 10th Anniversary of hospitality at the Vaughan Estates.

Also, it has been 70 years since the Vaughan Estate was a family dwelling and a decade since opening as one of Ontario's most sought after corporate and social facilities.

Vaughan Estate is the second of two large estate buildings on Sunnybrook land. McLean House, originally built in 1929, was called Bay View and served as the home of James Stanley McLean and his family.

Similarly, the Vaughan Estate, then called the Donningvale, was built in 1931 and long served as a dwelling for the Vaughan family. This English Jacobethan style building was built of grey stone and blended into the ravine setting.

Following the passing of J.J. Vaughan in 1966 and James Stanley McLean in 1954, both estates remained idle for sometime. Eventually, the University of Toronto acquired both the estate lands as well as Bay View and Donningvale.

During this time, both mansions were converted into clinical. In 1985 Bay View was renovated by the Sunnybrook Hospital and re-furbished to become the current corporate and social facility of McLean House.

In 1991 architects converted the Donningvale into a similar special events and conference facility now known as the Vaughan Estate. With proper maintenance, its original ironwork fittings, rich wood paneling, decorative moldings and superb fireplaces in oak, stone, plaster and marble remain all intact.

Now in 2001, the Estates is viewed as one of the leading meeting facilities in Ontario. As of fiscal year 2000/2001, the Estates recorded hosting 72 corporate social events with 3,735 attendees, 805 corporate meetings with 15,067 attendees at McLean House and 99 social events with 9,975 attendees and 983 corporate meetings with 31,921 attendees at the Vaughan Estate.
